You’ve always been a writer … IN YOUR HEAD. Now you want to bring your writing to the world
But…
  • You’ve never submitted anywhere because something more than your nerves is stopping you
  • You have a great plot — but the dialogue is stilted and boring
  • You have great characters — but nothing exciting happens in your story
  • Maybe you've even had a story published — but it felt like a fluke you can't replicate

You ordered every writing book on Amazon

You asked your friends for feedback

You've tried writing groups

You've participated in NaNoWriMo

You've tried "deliberate practice"

You watched more YouTube videos than you care to admit

BUT YOU’RE STILL ONLY A WRITER … IN YOUR HEAD.

  • You want to understand the methods.
  • You want to sharpen the skills.
  • And you want targeted feedback from experienced writers who know what they're talking about.

THIS COURSE IS THE ANSWER TO YOUR WRITING PRAYERS

Go from writer-in your head to writer-with a byline

"I have always loved writing, but never considered myself “a writer.” It was hard to make time for writing, I never knew what to write and how to write it … I hadn’t written anything in years.

I treated myself to Esther’s course and I’m so happy I did! I found the classes to be fun and informative, the homework and feedback very helpful, and I really enjoyed the camaraderie of the group.

The course not only taught me how to write a short story, it changed my perspective on writing in general. The story I wrote during the course was printed in Family First Magazine, but for me, the best takeaway was that since the course I’ve written and submitted another story and started my next one –

I now proudly say that yes, I am a writer!"

HEY! I’M ESTHER KURTZ

I’ve written dozens of short stories for Mishpacha’s main magazine, Calligraphy and Family First (yes, they are all a bit different). And I've published "Second Thoughts" a collection of short stories with Menucha Publishers.

I started out clueless and bumbled my way through my first stories. I thought it was magic and that I’d never write another story because I had no idea what I had done right.

Eventually, (read: a long time) I figured it out and now I KNOW how to develop ideas,  create characters, build plot and structure and do fancy tricks with my sentences.

But it doesn’t have to take years, it can take weeks - 6 to be exact to learn the foundations of short stories and to start crafting with confidence.

In this course, you will learn how to find and develop ideas. Turn your kernels into premises then into plots, then scenes, and then, wow, you have a real story on your hands to share with the world.

"As a columnist in Mishpacha Magazine I love to express myself through writing, but never really explored fiction. After six weeks I really feel confident that I have something worth submitting. Esther is so supportive and responsive and I would take this course again just as a refresher ! If I get a piece accepted the course pays for itself.”

The ability to write a short story seemed to me like an inborn talent, something writers did instinctively, and the type of writing only the few could do. Esther’s course showed me that with the right tools, it was within the reach of anyone who put their mind do to it. Each session is accompanied by relevant readings and engaging visuals. Esther is always available to help you through the tricky parts. The story I wrote in Esther’s workshop, On Ice, was published in Family First. I can now write a short story, and I often refer to the techniques I learned with Esther.

Frequently asked questions

You’ve got questions. We’ve got answers.

Can I pay in installments?

Yes.

There's an option at check out to split the payments into three equal monthly payments.

How long does it take to complete?

6 weeks. The course is designed to be completed within that timeframe including finishing a short story.

How long will I have access to the course?

A year after the course concludes

Is all the content available at once, or will it be dripped?

Everything is available all at once - learn at a pace that suits you best. I do recommend doing one class per week though, so you can do the assignments, let it all have time to percolate....

Is this course for me?

This course is for writers.
You know if you’re a writer, even if you don’t call yourself one. The material can be appreciated on many levels, each time you review it, you’ll find something you missed before, or understand better.

Will I be able to publish the story I write in your course?

Very possibly! Many former Short Story Crafter participants published the stories they wrote during the course.

Do you have access to magazine editors?

Yes, and No. While I know a lot of them, and they are wonderful amazing people, they do not want to feel pressured to accept pieces because you know me and I in turn do not want to spoil my relationship with them. Do they sometimes ask if writers took my course, yes. And that is more to ascertain the writer’s knowledge of craft and writing, it does not make an actual difference in acceptance rate and the like. Frum publications in general do not have high gatekeeping. If you have some talent, put in the work, and daven, your work will be accepted, you don’t need my help :)

Do you give direct feedback on stories?

I don't give direct feedback in email support.

For the Coaching sessions, you may send a something you wrote - up to 2000 words - for feedback

Is it true that one of your front teeth is longer than the other?

Yes.
Who told you?

"I gained so much from taking Esther's short story master course! Before the course, I knew I had writing ability but I didn't really have the skills necessary to write a short story. I tried and failed many times on my own because I just didn't have the tools. Esther's informative course material not only gave me the tools I needed to learn how to write short stories, it improved all areas of my writing and really opened my eyes to my own potential as a writer. I can't recommend it highly enough!"
